(CBS4) MIAMI A shopping center in Little Havana was heavily damaged Sunday afternoon after fire tore through the buildings, forcing businesses to evacuate and sending people from nearby shops to the street.
The fire, which burned for hours, was substantially out by about 1:30 p.m., according to CBS4 News crew on the scene. Investigators still are not sure what caused the fire.
At least five buildings in the Joyeria de las Americas shopping center in SW8th street west of SW 18th Ave. were heavily damaged, with flamed seen shooting from the roofs of the buildings, after the fire started shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday.
A number of other businesses in the area were threatened by the flames, and people working in those buildings were forced to evacuate as Miami firefighters battled intense flames.
Firefighters were forced to leave the buildings and simply work to control the flames because of the intensity of the fire and the structural damage to the shopping center.
A wall separating the buildings offered little protection from the fire, raising firefighters’ concerns.
Residents of the area were being asked to remain indoors because of the heavy smoke, and the danger it posed to people sensitive to breathing problems.
