MIAMI - Miami firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at the Joyeria Las Americas strip mall at 1892 SW Eighth Street
Several businesses in the complex were engulfed in flames. Firefighters said the blaze was sparked in the attic of one of the stores and spread quickly.
Flames shot from the roofs of at least five businesses in the strip mall and could be seen for miles.
At least five more neighboring businesses were threatened and received only limited protection from the fire's intense heat by a paraffin wall that surrounds the strip mall.
Due to heavy smoke, residents with respiratory problems were asked to close their windows and remain indoors.
"This is one of the worst of the three strip mall fires that we've had here on SW Eighth Street this year," Miami fire spokesman Ignatius "Iggy" E. Carroll said.
In recent months, there have been several arson fires in the area.
Firefighters withdrew from inside the building and took defensive positions, attacking the flames from the outside using aerial ladders and water from trucks in the street.
Carroll said it was too soon to speculate on the cause of the fire.
No one was injured but SW Eighth Street was temorarily shut down Sunday night and into Monday morning while the area was cleared of danger.
